BLYTHEWOOD – With the Blythewood girls soccer team locked into second place behind Clover in Region 3-5A, the Bengals finished off their region slate with a 4-0 shutout at Spring Valley Friday.
Ayres Ava scored back-to-back first-half goals for Blythewood after Madison Powell kicked in an opening goal and Amiyah Watts closed out the scoring with a goal at around 60-minute mark.
“We’re working hard,” Blythewood head coach Alyssa Farris said. “We had to make a lot of adjustments we’ve had some injuries and had to make some adjustments we’ve got a couple of non-region games next week to keep things rolling, but right now we’re just focusing on the playoffs.”
The win puts Blythewood at 10-6 overall and 7-3 in the region. The Bengals and Nation Ford were tied at 6-3 in the region standings going into Friday’s games—with Blythewood having the tiebreak in terms of more goals scored. The Falcons (10-7, 6-4) fell 4-3 at Fort Mill after two overtimes Friday night, giving the Bengals sole possession of second place.
Blythewood will open the 5A playoffs Tuesday, April 30 with a home game against Region 2-5A’s fourth-place team, which looks to be Spartanburg.
In the meantime, the Bengals played at A.C. Flora Wednesday and play host to White Knoll Friday night to keep in shape for the postseason.
Farris is in her second year coaching the Bengals. Her first year was on an interim basis as former head coach Kathy Knight is continuing her battle with cancer. She was named head coach before this season, her first official job as a head coach.
“I like it. It’s a big-time commitment, but I love the girls and building relationships and being there for them,” she said. “I’m having fun while they play soccer.”
