The President of the Royal Belgian Football Association, Pascale Van Damme, has announced her candidacy for a seat on the FIFA Council, UEFA revealed on Monday.
The election of the executive of world football’s governing body will take place on 3 April at the 49th UEFA Congress in Belgrade, Serbia.
The FIFA Council, formerly the FIFA Executive Committee, was established in 2016 following a series of scandals. It wields significant power within FIFA and is primarily a strategic body, responsible for key decisions.
Each confederation has representatives on the Council. The Union of European Football Associations, UEFA, is represented by three deputy chairpersons – including its president, Aleksander Ceferin – and six members.
One of these six seats is reserved for a woman. Pascale Van Damme is the sole candidate for this seat, for a four-year term.
For the male positions, Razvan Burleanu, Georgios Koumas, Bernd Neuendorf, and Dejan Savicevic are seeking to extend their terms.
