Bayern’s interest in signing Florian Wirtz remains strong even though the 21-year-old is likely to sign a contract extension at Bayer Leverkusen.
According to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports, Bayern are hoping to sign Wirtz via a release clause in the summer of 2026 after the FIFA World Cup. Bayern Munich’s honorary president, Uli Hoeness, is directly involved in negotiations with Wirtz’s camp, particularly as he has a long-standing and strong relationship with Wirtz’s father, Hans Wirtz, which dates back to the player’s time at FC Köln. Additionally, Bayern’s sporting director, Max Eberl, contacted Wirtz’s representatives a few weeks ago to explore the possibility of a move.
Bayern has laid significant groundwork for a potential deal, but the final decision rests with the player. In order to include a release clause for 2026 in his new contract, Wirtz’s camp would need to communicate this to Bayer Leverkusen’s decision-makers in advance.
Wirtz’s current contract at Leverkusen runs until 2027. If he fails to sign a renewal, Bayern Munich and other interested clubs could imagine signing the player for a relatively cheap amount in 2026. Hence, a contract extension would make Leverkusen’s negotiating position stronger in the coming transfer windows and help them secure a tidy sum when the attacking midfielder eventually moves on.
For FC Bayern, the importance of a Bayern-specific 2026 release clause in his new contract is utmost, because without it, they could face a hard time in a transfer battle with several top La Liga and Premier League clubs.
Florian Wirtz keeps solidifying his spot as one of the best midfielders in Europe through his dazzling performances at Leverkusen. He was a crucial player in the Werkself’s unbeaten domestic double last season but his levels have gone up even higher this campaign. The 21-year-old has already netted 12 goals in the first half of the season. His playmaking prowess remains as sharp as ever, as he has also registered 8 assists to his name.
Wirtz is competing in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in his career this season, and it took him no time to make his mark in the elite competition. He has scored five goals in the tournament so far, helping Leverkusen stay in the top 8 of the league table. His performances have not only elevated his club but also his individual stock, making him one of the most sought-after young talents in world football.
