We could soon find out just how much B.C. is on the hook for when it comes to hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026.
The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport says the province will be making “an announcement” about the event Tuesday.
The announcement will take place at BC Place at 1:30 p.m.
The cost of hosting the games has remained a big unknown, despite Toronto unveiling in February that it’s budget increased from $300 million to $380 million.
People have been eager to know what additional costs B.C. could be faced with, since more FIFA matches were added to its roster earlier this year.
B.C.’s Budget 2024 mentioned contingency allocations of $3.7 billion in 2026/2027, which included uncertain costs related to the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026.

However, B.C.’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport had told CityNews that the majority of the allocation in the budget was not for FIFA.
“Most of the contingency funds will be for caseload pressures, CleanBC initiatives, emergency response, floods, fires and other unforeseen events,” it said in a statement.
The ministry explained it continues to work with its event partners to further B.C.’s overall cost estimates for “planning, staging and hosting FIFA World Cup ’26 matches,” along with its projections of the economic benefits of hosting two additional matches.
At the time, the ministry said more matches meant more opportunities to boost tourism in B.C.
