WORLD CUP 2026
The Azteca is one of football’s historic stadiums – it’s the only stadium to have witnessed both Diego Maradona and Pelé crowned world champions and, in 2026, it will become the first to host three World Cups. The Coloso de Santa Úrsula is currently being remodelled to comply with FIFA standards.

Representatives from world football’s governing body recently visited the stadium to review how the work was coming along, but have yet to give the seal of approval as the stadium still does not fulfill a range of strict criteria – in fact, the stadium is six months behind schedule in comparison with Mexico’s other World Cup venues, Akron Stadium and BBVA Stadium.

Details of FIFA’s visit were reported by ‘365 Scores México’ who added that, “The first report of the year has arrived and the Azteca is DELAYED by six months according to its planned renovations”. It was indicated that the others stadiums are ahead of the Azteca in terms of the standards that FIFA requested for the next World Cup.
Due to the renovation work, Cruz Azul have temporarily moved to the Ciudad de los Deportes Stadium, its former home. However, the situation was different for América – they continue to play their home games there. Club owner Emilio Azcárraga stated that renovation work on the stadium would be undertaken in stages, as to give the team the opportunity to continue playing there.
