Arizona lands former New Mexico (and briefly ASU) offensive lineman Shancco Matautia – Arizona Desert Swarm

Filed under:
Brent Brennan and the Arizona Wildcats have added multiple talented players over the past few weeks from the Transfer Portal.
Offensively, one of the focuses was the line. Depth and talented players were needed to push the current players on the roster and fill in any holes that popped up during the spring. Up until Friday, the ‘Cats had added two.
Now, offensive line coach Josh Oglesby can add former New Mexico (and briefly ASU) lineman Shancco Matautia as the experienced transfer publicly announced his decision to play in Tucson. He will have two seasons of eligibility.

The 6-foot-2, 346-pound interior lineman played three seasons for New Mexico—coached by current UA assistant Danny Gonzales—and procured a large amount of starting experience. Matautia started 21 out of 24 games, including two starts as a true freshman in 2021.
In mid-December, the Anaheim Servite High School product (who blocked for UA quarterback Noah Fifita) announced he was transferring from New Mexico. Shortly thereafter he committed to ASU, but after four months in TEmpe re-entered the NCAA transfer portal.
Matautia has had a pretty solid career in college thus far. According to PFF, he has only given up only 22 pressures and three sacks on the QB in just under 1,080 career snaps. He will immediately add much needed experience and talent behind the current offensive line and makes for a good rotational player as well.
He is the UA’s 12th spring portal addition, third on the offensive line.
