One of my favorite things about summer is the arrival of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine and when I arrived at my office late Friday morning, there it was, sitting on my desk.
It was actually several hours later that I really read any of it because I had other things on my to-do list and I’ve actually barely read any of it at all.
The cover is graced by University of Texas’ Quinn Ewers and Texas A&M’s Conner Weigman and between the two of them are the words, “Rivalry Reborn.”
I look forward to reading that story as football fans will once again be able to enjoy the best rivalry in college football.
It would be interesting to know how many times a year we open up the magazine.
Once I finally opened it up for the first time today, the first page I turned to was the one previewing SFA’s upcoming season where the Lumberjacks are predicted to finish third in their first year back in the Southland Conference.
DCTF reads, “No one understands more than (SFA head football coach) Colby Carthel that SFA didn’t reach its standard last season. But that’s a good thing because Carthel took time to examine the program and realize that some changes were needed. One of Carthel’s best personality traits is his loyalty. But every strength comes with weaknesses, and the Lumberjacks offense needed a new voice.”
The next paragraph goes on to talk about new offensive coordinator Chris Ross.
I find the words “Rivalry Reborn” fitting for SFA.
Granted, none of its rivalries hold a candle to that of Texas and A&M but I’m looking forward to renewed rivalries, specifically with Northwestern, and hopefully the stakes will be high with something to take home but I digress.
After reading up on that, I flipped to the high school pages and stopped at District 7-5A DII where the publication predicts Nacogdoches to finish in the fifth spot to just miss the playoffs.
“(Nacogdoches athletic director and head football coach Darby) House says the Dragons are stronger up front this season, and that starts with (Joshua) Knepp on offense and (Atlantis) Sessions (30 tackles, 3.5 sacks) and (Joel) Jones on defense,” the magazine reads.
That’s just a brief snippet of what it says about the Dragons and I’ll plan on taking a deeper dive into it all with what it says about our other surrounding schools but in the meantime, I’ve got to catch up on my reading.
And of course, it’s all work related.
Oh, and if you’re going to ask me where you can get your hands on a copy, I believe they will start hitting the shelves in the next few weeks or so but I could be wrong. If you subscribe to the magazine, a copy will arrive in your mailbox before they arrive in the stores.
Either way, it’s definitely worth grabbing a copy.
