The difficulty of playing two consecutive days was on display Thursday night for the Denham Springs girls soccer team, but the Yellow Jackets ultimately got the result they wanted.
After a sluggish start, Denham Springs picked up its tempo scoring all of its goals in the second half of a 6-0 win over Liberty at Yellow Jackets Stadium.
Liberty (2-7-0) got off the game’s first shot, a 15-yard attempt by Siriah Dorsesy that was wide right. It was the only true scoring chance all night for the Patriots, who played most of the game in Yellow Jackets scoring third of the pitch.
Liberty’s defense held firm until Denham Springs (7-2-0) broke a scoreless tie on Addison Wyatt’s goal in the 42nd minute. Two minutes later, Juliana Williams scored the first of her four goals on the night, and the Yellow Jackets were on their way.
Williams added goals in the 52nd, 61st and 76th minutes, and Valeria Ortiz put away the final goal in stoppage time.
“We didn’t come out with a lot of focus,” Denham Springs coach Jeff Klug said. “We played last night (a 7-0 win over Pope John Paul) and we played very well. Its hard to play with that type of intensity two nights in a row. We gave ourselves some chances in the first half, but we didn’t have that final finish.”
The opening half featured 16 shots from Denham Springs. The Jackets best scoring chance came in the 27th minute when Alaina Milam sent a pass from left of the goal into the box where Williams’ header at close range was cleared away by Liberty goalkeeper Kiersten Plummer.
Milam had another chance in the 30th minute working one-on-one against Plummer, but her shot was high and over the goal.
The Yellow Jackets’ offensive pressure finally took its toll in the second half. Senior goalie Claire Marx saw most of her action playing up and away from the goal, and was rarely challenged at the net.
“The whole game we let our attitude and our frustrations get to us,” said Williams, who now has 20 goals on the season. “We talked at halftime, fixed our mistakes and we put balls in the back of the net, which is what we needed.”
Liberty created nine of their 16 corner kicks in the second half, and finished the game with 33 shots. Plummer had 11 saves for Liberty.
