This week saw a couple of personal milestones and team achievements in Adel. (Note: Events covered April 9-15)
In a series that has been dominated by Dallas Center-Grimes over the past five years — winning all five games — ADM knocked down the door Friday night against the Mustangs with 2-1 win on the road.
Helping getting over the hump, Brock Richardson and Peyton Meier each lined up shots to get the Tigers on the board while Mason Tollari and Rhylan Stine-Smith provided the assists.
And keeping the Mustangs’ damage to a minimum, Owen Evans allowed just one goal while making 14 saves — a new season-high for the junior goalie.
The Tigers played host for a tournament on Saturday, splitting a pair of games with North Scott and Bishop Heelan.
In both wins this season, ADM has played shutout defense, this time winning 3-0 over North Scott with equal contributions from Hannah Desmarais, Brenna Seidl and Jada Grove with one goal apiece. Grove and Seidl also helped with assists while goalie Kathryn Ransom’s six saves kept the Lady Lancers of the scoreboard.
A first half goal from Grove against Bishop Heelan (6-2) helped take the game into overtime knotted 1-1 but the Crusaders found the last goal of the day for a 2-1 win.
The Tigers were chock-full of accomplishments at Saturday’s Jim Duncan Invitational hosted by Drake. However, it was April 11 where the biggest history was made at the Tigers’ home meet.
After crushing the school discus record set in 1988 (159-foot-11) with a throw of 174-08 at Iowa City West, senior thrower Drew Hickey stepped up and broke the six-decade old shot put record. Hickey tossed a new top distance of 55-04 ½. That’s two school records in a 10-day span.
Among 3A peers, Hickey ranks second in shot put and fourth among discus PR’s as of April 15.
ADM scorched the competition Monday at Bondurant-Farrar. At 168 points, the next-highest score was 98 points.
On top of scoring in two soccer games this week, Jada Grove won both the 100 and 200-meter dash events to lead the team in solo scoring along with a win in the 4×100 relay along with Peyton Standley, Aniston Tollari and Josi Dufoe.
Playing on their home green on April 11, the Tigers tied Woodward-Granger 204-204. ADM had three of the top five scores led by Cecelia Gardiner’s 47 strokes for second place. Kenzee Lathrop and Aubrey Winter hit 50 and 53, respectively.
ADM got a little snapshot of what to expect this season both in the conference and at the state level, as they competed against last year’s RRC champion and state third place Gilbert on Monday.
This meeting gave Gilbert the edge with a 306-292 win on 18 holes. Comparatively, ADM won last year’s half round meeting before losing by four strokes to the rival Tigers at the RRC tournament, and soon after one-upping ADM at the state meet.
