BILLINGS, Mont. – Montana State University Billings head men’s soccer coach Aaron Champenoy announced Monday that he would be stepping away from his position due to personal reasons ahead of the 2024-25 academic year.
“This has been one of the toughest choices I’ve ever had to make,” said Champenoy. “But it is the right one for me and my family. As I get older, I know every day is precious, and I can no longer afford to miss out on the time we need together. My measure of success has always been in whether the program is in a better place than when I arrived, and I can confidently say yes. We have installed a new field and lights, an exciting young group, and a positive culture that improves itself every day. I’m sad to no longer be leading the program, but know that this program will continue to grow and improve, and will be cheering on from afar.”
Champenoy took over the position on an interim basis in the 2022 season, before being named the permanent head coach for the 2023 season. In his two seasons, Champenoy helped guide the Yellowjackets to a 10-17-6 (.394) record in 33 games, including a 5-12-5 (.341) record in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
During his tenure, the Yellowjackets had ten total All-GNAC selections, including a first team selection in 2022, and a second team selection in 2023. Champenoy also saw his student-athletes combine to earn 16 Academic All-GNAC honors and 11 Academic All-District awards in his time in charge, while the team’s collective GPA was consistently ranked as one of the highest of all the Yellowjackets’ athletic programs.
“I would like to thank Coach Champenoy for his leadership of our men’s soccer program over the past two years,” said MSUB director of athletics Michael Bazemore. “He was able to come in and help redirect our culture and competitiveness in a short time span. While we are disheartened that he is leaving our program, we completely understand and support his decision, and wish nothing but positive outcomes for him in the future.”
The Yellowjacket athletic department is currently evaluating next steps to ensure the best direction for the program in the 2024 season and beyond.
