A crucial summer awaits the Mexican Men’s National Team as El Tri prepares for the 2024 Copa America in the United States.
During the tournament, Mexico manager Jaime Lozano will start to figure out his 23-man roster and starting 11 ahead of the 2026 World Cup, part of which will take place on home soil in Mexico.
Lozano learned a lot about his team against top-strength opposition, and for the most part, it wasn’t good news. Mexico was outclassed defensively and in transition in a 4-0 defeat to Uruguay. Lozano then doubled-down on his plans to have Edson Alvarez lead Mexico attacks by moving him to centerback against Brazil, when ended in a 3-2 defeat.
On the other hand, with some of the rising stars from the last Liga MX season coming on in the second half, Mexico battled back to draw level with Brazil, giving the team and its fans a little hope heading into the start of the Copa America.

Mexico has had a busy schedule in 2024 with two games in the CONCACAF Nations League in March and three pre-Copa America friendly matches in June.

Mexico has entered Copa America with a record of two wins and three defeats. El Tri beat Panama in CONCACAF Nations League before losing 2-0 to the U.S. in the Nations League final.
In June, El Tri started off the camp with a 1-0 win over Bolivia – which used a second-string side itself – before losing 4-0 to Uruguay and 3-2 to Brazil.

The last Copa America match that Mexico played is one that burns badly in the memories of El Tri fans. In the quarterfinals of the 2016 Copa America centenario in the U.S., Mexico – coached by Juan Carlos Osorio – were smashed, 7-0, by Chile.
This time around, Mexico fans will hope that Lozano’s squad can fare better. Mexico will certainly be a favorite to get out of their group, and then they will likely face either Argentina or Canada/Peru/Chile in the quarterfinals. A rematch with Chile could give El Tri fans some revenge this year, even if Chile isn’t at the same heights as it was back in 2016.
