Burundi spoiled Kenya’s early celebrations as they grabbed a late equaliser to share the spoils in a 1-1 draw at the Bingu National Stadium in the third match of the CAF 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Friday afternoon.
The result means that both teams remain level on points in Group F, with four apiece in their respective qualifying campaigns.
The match started off being dominated by Burundi, however Kenya eventually figured them out. It was a tale of two teams in the first half, as a strong midfield battle showed that very little could separate the two sides.
The second half started off more intensely, and Kenya turned things up a gear with their attacking style of play. Their breakthrough came in the 72nd minute through Duke Abuya, who made the most of a blistering through pass and finished after timing his run accurately.
Kenya continued to dominate, however in the final 10 minutes of normal time Burundi started to show a different side to themselves. A lapse in concentration led to the Harambee Stars losing their lead in 85th minute, as Subi Abdallah got his name on the scoresheet.
The Swallows continued to threaten Kenya’s defence but they held their ground well to make sure that they left Lilongwe with at least a point. As the full-time whistle blew, the match ultimately ended all square and the nations shared the points.
