Pierce Mooberry pulled a fast one on the entire Nebraska football coaching staff.
With the Huskers set to host a Friday Night Lights camp, Mooberry let them know that he wanted to come down to Lincoln earlier in the day to chat about the program and ask some further questions. But when Mooberry sat down with the Husker coaches, he had something different to say.
The Millard North linebacker pledged to Nebraska on the spot, announcing his commitment into the Huskers’ 2025 class on Saturday.
“They were definitely pumped, it got the entire staff up hugging and being excited about it,” Mooberry said. “It was a great day.”
Mooberry is now Nebraska’s fifth 2025 in-state commit, joining his high school teammate, Caden VerMaas, alongside Omaha North’s Tyson Terry, Wahoo Neumann’s Conor Booth and Lincoln Southwest’s Jackson Carpenter.
Mooberry said he has a strong relationship with the in-state class, having played eighth-grade football with Terry and having met Carpenter and Booth multiple times on recruiting visits. Mooberry will join those future teammates on a June 21 official visit that he will now go on as a Husker commit.
Having been offered by Nebraska in January, Mooberry always considered Nebraska as one of his top options alongside Iowa State, Kansas State and Minnesota.
The 6-foot-4, 200-pound linebacker recruit unofficially visited campus for a spring practice before five Nebraska assistants — Tony White, Terrance Knighton, Rob Dvoracek, Evan Cooper and Ed Foley — returned the favor by visiting Mooberry at his high school in May.
When the calendar flipped to June and Mooberry began to consider official visits to Kansas State and Minnesota, he said he felt in his heart that Nebraska was the place for him.
“When I’ve gone up there, it just felt right,” Mooberry said. “I went some other places and gave them a chance, but none of them felt like Nebraska did; it feels like home.”
The three-star recruit spent the last two seasons playing deep behind the line of scrimmage as a safety in Millard North’s defensive system. Mooberry will be moving to linebacker next season and will likely continue in that role down the road where the combination of size and athleticism will serve him well.
Mooberry is looking forward to spending the summer overseeing team workouts and grinding in the weight room as a key team leader — a role he takes seriously.
“I’m a leader; the guys who I play with, I’ll let them know if they’re doing things right or it’s sloppy,” Mooberry said. “I’ll hold the standard and I always want to back it up with my own effort.”
Nebraska is now up to 10 players in its 2025 recruiting class, having landed commitments from St. Louis Cardinal Ritter running back Jamarion Parker and Mooberry in the same week.
