N.Y. adding extra measures for T20 World Cup on Long Island – Sports Business Journal

N.Y. officials are “preparing for the ‘Super Bowl on steroids'” as “thousands descend upon Nassau County for the clash of arch-rivals India and Pakistan” in the group stage of the T20 World Cup on Sunday, according to Amy Tennery of REUTERS. The two sides form “one of the most intense rivalries in sport,” and the temporary, 34,000-seat stadium in East Meadow, N.Y., will be “bursting at the seams.” Tennery noted that has meant an “extraordinary safety effort, with security personnel from every level in the region working in conjunction in the county.” The N.Y. state legislature and Gov. Kathy Hochul said last week that there will be “increased security for the World Cup” after reported threats, including those “specifically related to the India-Pakistan fixture.” The two sides have not played a test since the 2008 Mumbai attacks. As of Monday afternoon, the “least expensive ticket available” for Sunday’s match was $790 on StubHub (REUTERS, 6/3).

A WHOLE NEW WORLD: NEWSDAY’s Ledda & Brodsky wrote Long Island on Monday was “transformed into one of the centers of the cricket universe,” as 12,562 fans converged on the temporary 34,000-seat stadium for the start of the T20 World Cup. Law enforcement officials said that the South Africa-Sri Lanka test proceeded with “minimal traffic and parking disruptions outside the venue and no arrests.” Ledda & Brodsky reported roughly a “third of the stadium-style outdoor seating was filled” when the match started at 10:30am ET. The event had an “Americanized feel,” from singer Bruno Mars and the band Backstreet Boys “blasting on loudspeakers during breaks in the action, to the hot dogs and pretzels sold at concession stands.” Nassau County Exec Bruce Blakeman said that his administration had “worked out some minor logistical issues, including the ease of getting fans into the stadium,” following Saturday’s exhibition match (NEWSDAY, 6/4).
On this week’s pod, Joel Klatt joins the show to talk all things UFL and college football. The Fox Sports football analyst shares his thoughts on the future of spring football and the changing landscape on the college gridiron. Later in the show, SBJ’s Alex Silverman gets us set for the Stanley Cup Final between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers. Plus, Mollie Cahillane fills us in on who’s up and who’s down in sports media.
