YPSILANTI — The MHSAA girls’ soccer playoffs resumed on Tuesday with the regional semifinals taking place between recent district champions.
A Division 1 regional semifinal between Dearborn High and Grosse Pointe South kicked off the night at Ypsilanti Lincoln High School on Tuesday. This was the third postseason in as many years between the two schools with Dearborn besting South a season ago in districts by a final of 3-0.
In this latest showdown between the two programs, it was the Blue Devils from South getting their revenge, using a first-half flurry to get the better of the local Pioneers, 5-1.
The first twenty minutes of the contest saw both teams feeling each other out, like a heavyweight boxing match, with neither side really getting any big time scoring opportunities.
The next ten minutes, however, proved to be the downfall of Dearborn.
At the 19:07 mark of the first half, Savannah Spangler broke the scoreless tie to give South the 1-0 lead. Spangler’s efforts were backed up at the 16:21 mark by Elaina Morgan and Christina Fett at the 11:37 mark. All of a sudden, the Devils led 3-0.
Dearborn found their first golden scoring opportunity a few minutes later at the 8:15 mark. A set piece just outside the box was played in and a mad scramble for the ball resulted in a bar down and out off of the cross bar.
The game remained a three-score advantage going into halftime. Coming out of the intermission, South picked up where they left off from the first 40 minutes.
The Devils added two more by way of Lilia Moussiaux and Jill Adams, pushing their lead to 5-0.
With 2:26 remaining in the game, Dearborn was able to find their lone marker, stopping the shutout bid for South. Senior Nadine Jawad put one past the Devils keeper on a breakaway effort.
Dearborn head coach Tony Ventura declined to comment after the game. The loss marks the end of a very successful spring campaign for the Pioneers, finishing with a record of 16-5-1 overall.
