Summer is almost here, which means college football preseason preview magazines are starting to hit the shelves.
Lindy’s Sports became the first magazine to release their preview of the 2024 season, with their 27th annual edition becoming available last week. The publication broke down each conference, ranked all 133 teams and gave an in-depth look at the outlook for every program.
Here’s what the magazine said about Rutgers:
Scarlet Knight scouting report
The magazine gave a rundown of every program using multiple superlative categories:
Primary Strengths: Rutgers has depth and experience at many positions, including running back. … Defensively, the front four should be able to get pressure without relying heavily on the blitz.
Potential Problems: There are still questions of whether the offensive line has enough depth and if it has the talent to be better in pass protection. More production in the passing game is vital to the offense being less predictable and more explosive.
Players to watch: RB Kyle Monangai, WR Dymere Miller, WR Christian Dremel, DE Aaron Lewis, DE Wesley Bailey, DT Malcolm Ray, LB Mohamed Toure, LB Tyreem Powell, S Flip Dixon.
Top Newcomer: WR Dymere Miller: Rutgers went into the portal to grab a No. 1 receiver in Miller, who tore it up at Monmouth last fall. His 90 receptions were second at the FCS level and his 1,295 yards was tops among FCS players. He caught nine touchdown passes and had a surreal game against New Hampshire, in which he caught 11 passes for 333 yards and two touchdowns.
Overview: Rutgers ended 2023 with a win against Miami in the Pinstripe Bowl and is poised for a strong season because its schedule — Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan are not on it, although Washington, USC and UCLA are — and experience.
Where Scarlet Knights stand
The magazine ranked every FBS football program nationally and within their own conference.
– Nationally, the Scarlet Knights were ranked 46th; that is roughly the same area that ESPN’s SP+ (49th) and USA Today (47th) ranked Rutgers.
Each team outside the top 25 had a small note next to its ranking.
Rutgers: “Becoming competitive is a big step; Check! (The next step is harder).”
– In the Big Ten, Rutgers is ranked 10th, sandwiched between Washington and Maryland. That is a better outlook than the SP+, which saw the Scarlet Knights as the 13th-best Big Ten team.
Each team had blurbs under three categories: good news, bad news and our call.
Good News: RU has something special in RB Kyle Monangai; defense looks salty.
Bad News: Wanted: A good QB. Call 1-800-Schiano.
Our Call: Trying harder only gets you so far.
Kyle Monangai gets some respect
Fresh off of leading the Big Ten in rushing, the veteran running back received plenty of respect from Lindy’s.
The Don Bosco Prep product was listed as the 15th-best running back in the country (fifth-best in the Big Ten), with a blurb noting he was named the MVP of the Pinstripe Bowl, leading the Scarlet Knights to a win over Miami.
Monangai was named a preseason third-team All-Big Ten selection. He was joined by linebacker Tyreem Powell, who was also named a third-team selection, as the only Scarlet Knights to earn preseason all-Big Ten honors from the publication.
Greg Schiano is high on his quarterback
The Rutgers coach was quoted once in the magazine, and he spoke about incoming Minnesota transfer Athan Kaliakmanis, who was named the program’s starting quarterback out of the spring.
“I think Athan has blended very well. He has a head start in that he knows our system.”
Recruiting
Every program received a blurb about their 2024 recruiting class. The Scarlet Knights hauled in the 35th-ranked class in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
The Scarlet Knights inked two of the top four players in (New Jersey) in athlete Gabriel Winowich and quarterback AJ Surace. They also landed the No. 1 recruit in New York, tight end Korey Duff. Their headliner comes from the Peach State in Antonio White, who ranked as a top-20 receiver nationally.
