The toss will take place at 7:00 pm local time.
Years before England and Australia played the first-ever Test in 1877, the USA and Canada pitted against each other in a three-day game in 1844, making it the first-ever recorded international cricket match. In a revival of the oldest cricket rivalry, the two sides will meet again at the 2024 T20 World Cup opener. In the format’s history between the two teams, the USA have won four times, while Canada have prevailed twice, with the sole tie coming in the 2021 T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier.
USA’s captain, Monank Patel, didn’t travel with their team for the practice session on the eve of the tournament curtain-raiser. However, he is expected to be available on the match day. Ali Khan will spearhead their pace attack after an inspiring series win against Bangladesh recently. All eyes will be on Harmeet Singh, who starred in USA’s maiden win against a Full Member in that series.
For Canada, experienced No.3 batter Rayyan Pathan retired hurt after facing a ball in the warm-up fixture against Nepal. There has been no recent update on his fitness. In Rayyan Pathan’s probable absence, Aaron Johnson and Navneet Dhaliwal have to step up. Pacer Dilon Heyliger, the star of their win against Nepal with 4-20, will look to replicate his performance.
USA: Monank Patel (c) (wk), Aaron Jones, Steven Taylor, Nitish Kumar, Corey Anderson, Jasdeep Singh, Ali Khan, Saurabh Netravalkar, Harmeet Singh, Andries Gous, Nostush Kenjige/Shadley Van Schalkwyk
Canada: Navneet Dhaliwal, Aaron Johnson, Pargat Singh, Shreyas Movva (wk), Ravinderpal Singh, Nicholas Kirton, Saad Bin Zafar (c), Kaleem Sana, Nikhil Dutta, Dilon Heyliger, Jeremy Gordon
West Indies (WI) vs Papua New Guinea (PNG) – 10:30 AM local time
Namibia (NAM) vs OMAN (OMA) – 8:30 pm local time
Ali Khan’s warning that the USA “will try to eat” whoever comes in their way after winning over Bangladesh and that they rested several of their key members in the final fixture of the series tell that they are high on confidence. Expect them to clinch the tournament opener. Rain could make an entry at some point though.
