Colonial Forge girls soccer secured a subregional championship on Monday night against Mountain View, 2-1, in extra time. Sadie McIllece scored the game-winner, a penalty conversion in the first half of extra time.
It was formally announced on Friday that Mountain View head girls soccer coach Fernando Ramos is stepping down, effective immediately, after 16 years at the helm for the Wildcats.
Ramos has spent the last eight seasons as head coach for the girls team and spent the previous eight with the boys team.
“It was a very emotional decision and it’s something that’s been on my mind the last couple of years,” Ramos said. “A lot of it had to do with the growth of my kids. … I wanted to be able to support my kids and my wife more from home and I wanted someone else to be able to come in and give more of the commitment to the Mountain View girls that they deserve.”
Ramos let his players know first on Thursday night after a season-ending loss against Battlefield in the Virginia High School League Region 6B quarterfinals.
He’s helped to revitalize both programs in recent years, with the girls most recently reaching the Class 5 state tournament in 2019.
“It’s a big loss for us,” Mountain View athletic director Greg Margheim said. “Him and Steve Cassiday, his assistant, took us to a whole new level. He’s incredible. He’s a great coach. His demeanor on the sidelines was outstanding, so even-keel.”
Ramos treated Mountain View soccer with a level of professionalism, from what did on the field to the locker rooms, but he won’t be leaving the Wildcats entirely, keeping his teaching position within the school.
He’ll still be around the program, especially as the Wildcats look for his replacement. Several in-house candidates are to be considered, but an extensive search will soon be underway.
“We’ll post it like any other job, see who’s out there, see who applies,” Margheim said. “We have a plan and we feel comfortable.”
