Garden Grove has hired Matt LemMon of Tamalpais in Northern California as its football coach, the Argonauts and Garden Grove Unified announced Tuesday.
LemMon, 32, led Tamalpais, located in Mill Valley, the past seven seasons. He guided the school to an 8-4 record last season and a trip to the second round of North Coast Section Division 3 playoffs.
At Garden Grove, he replaces Ricardo Cepeda, who resigned after 10 seasons to become the school’s athletic director.
Tamalpais finished third in the challenging Marin County League that included Marin Catholic, which won the state Division 3-A title this past season, and San Marin, the state Division 4-A champion in 2022.
LemMon said he was drawn to Garden Grove because of the competitive SoCal football scene and the opportunity to play on Friday nights. He said many schools in Marin County don’t have lights and play their games on Saturdays.
“I’m excited to get down there,” said LemMon, who will teach history at Garden Grove.
LemMon compiled a 38-32 record with four playoff appearances at Tamalpais.
He served as an offensive line and running backs coach at Hercules in Northern California before taking the reins at Tamalpais.
At Hercules, he coached under his late mentor, Gerald Montgomery.
LemMon played high school football at St. Mary’s in Albany in Northern California and graduated from San Diego State.
