Defender Benjamin Pavard has opened up about his reasons for joining Inter Milan from Bayern Munich last summer.
The 28-year-old spoke to French broadcaster TF1, via FCInterNews. He also looked back on the Nerazzurri’s Serie A title celebrations this season.
Pavard was one of Inter’s most high profile signings last summer.
The France international was a very late arrival in the transfer window. Inter chased him in the last couple weeks of the window, and only completed the signing the day before deadline day.
Pavard came to Inter for a significant transfer fee.
Even with the Frenchman having been just one year away from the end of his contract at Bayern, the Bavarians were not willing to let him go for cheap – and Inter were willing to invest.
In his first season at Inter, Pavard has become a fixture on the right of the back three
This role in the Nerazzurri’s 3-5-2 system seems to have been perfect for balancing Pavard’s qualities as an out-and-out defender, and a more attack-minded right-back.
Asked why he joined Inter in the summer, Pavard replied “Because it’s a legendary club.”
“One that’s won several trophies.”
“And also because I can play in my ideal position here,” the Frenchman noted.
The 3-5-2 system has proven to suit Pavard to the ground. This was reportedly a big reason why he pushed for an exit from Bayern Munich, where he largely played at full-back.
“There was a perfect combination of factors for me to feel comfortable here,” Pavard said.
And Pavard also opened up about the Serie A title celebratory parade this season. “It was something incredible,” the 28-year-old said.
“I’d never seen anything like it.”
“We had an eight-hour bus ride from the stadium to the Duomo,” Pavard looked back.
“I remember I asked my parents, who were present, where they were. And they replied, ‘We’re close to the Duomo, but you passed by too quickly.’”
“I turned, and I saw my mother starting to make her way through the crowd, pushing through everyone, with my father behind her.”
Pavard looked back, “I saw tears on their faces. And that gave me an incredible feeling.”
“They made so many sacrifices to be there,” the Inter defender said.
