Football Australia has claimed the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup generated AUS$1.32 billion (US$865.7 million) in economic impact for the co-host nation in its Legacy’ 23 post-tournament report.
The World Cup drew huge public interest, with 70 per cent of the country’s population said to have watched the tournament. More then half (56 per cent)of fans that went to games featuring the Matildas were female, which goes against typical attendance trends for soccer competitions.
The sport’s increased popularity has resulted in a 123 per cent jump in average attendances at A-League Women games this season, while streaming viewership for games on Paramount+ and 10Play has increased by 120 per cent on the previous year.
The country may not have long to wait for its next women’s soccer tournament, as SportsPro understands that Australia is now the only country bidding to host the Women’s Asian Cup in 2026, after Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan both withdrew from the race.
Football Australia is said to be in talks with both state governments and the federal government, and could be confirmed as the tournament’s host in April.
