MEXICO CITY – In preparation for the 2026 World Cup, where Mexico, together with Canada and the United States, will host some of the games, in addition to the inauguration, the Mexican Government announced the remodeling of the Mexico City International Airport (AICM).
Admiral Juan José Padilla Olmos, General Director of Grupo Aeroportuario de la Ciudad de México (GACM), informed during the morning conference that the remodeling will require an investment of approximately US$390 billion.
He emphasized that this figure comes from resources self-generated by the AICM’s administration, so no expenditure from the Federal Expenditure Budget will be required.
He detailed that this AICM modernization project includes 75 works and services, as well as 24 acquisitions to update electromechanical, security and systems equipment of the capital’s air terminal. He pointed out that the remodeling project contemplates the beginning of the works between April and June of this year, with an estimated completion date scheduled between April and May 2026.
Admiral Padilla Olmos pointed out that these works include the architectural modernization of Terminals 1 and 2; the expansion of the last waiting rooms and corridors for flow separation. As well as the maintenance of runways, aprons and the construction of three taxiways; the coordination for road improvements and the modernization of equipment; he clarified that this remodeling will not affect the airport’s routine operation, as it will be carried out in phases.
For her part, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo reiterated that the comprehensive remodeling of the AICM will begin between April and June of this year.
