Aalborg Handball was notified Wednesday morning that Miguel Martins will not participate in the ongoing World Cup finals for Portugal, as he has tested positive for doping in connection with the Portuguese national team's activities leading up to the final round.
"Of course it comes as a big shock for us to hear and we have of course been in contact with Miguel, who himself is just as confused as we are and insists that he has not done anything illegal", says Aalborg Handball's director Jan Larsen in a press release.
"He has promptly asked to have the so-called B test done in order to get the matter settled, but it is certain that he will not participate in the World Cup finals", says Aalborg Handball's director Jan Larsen.
"We cannot and will not do anything further in the case until the answer for the B test is available, and we do not know at the moment when that will happen. When we know the answer to the test we will deal with the further process, says Jan Larsen.
Martins has been with the Portuguese national team since 2016, and has played more than 100 internationals for Portugal. Before going to Aalborg, he played for the Hungarian club Pick Szeged.
