Veteran high school football coach Stanley Dunbar will be returning to the Rhode Island sidelines this fall. Dunbar has been hired as the new varsity football coach at the Portsmouth Abbey School.
“When we began the search for our next football head coach, we were inundated with applications from across the country. But Coach Dunbar’s experience and deep ties to Rhode Island made him stand out above the rest. Being a man of faith with a desire to use football to help young men grow in knowledge and grace, Coach Dunbar is going to usher in the next era in Portsmouth Abbey football,” said Portsmouth Abbey Athletic Director Chris Milmoe. “We are thrilled to have him join our community.”
Dunbar is currently the defensive coordinator and assistant director of admissions at Suffield (Connecticut) Academy. He had previously served as the head coach at Westerly High School and Coventry High School in Rhode Island. He is also the founder and director of Breakthrough Elite Football, an organization that hosts camps, clinics, leagues, and showcases for football players in the offseason. Breakthrough Elite Football is the largest amateur football organization in New England.
Dunbar is taking over the football program from Elliot Moffie. PortsmouthAbbey is a member of the New England Prep School Athletic Conference and competes in the Evergreen League.
