The Texas Tech football program on Tuesday announced the hiring of Jack Teachey as a senior defensive analyst, reuniting the longtime former Wofford assistant coach with new defensive coordinator Shiel Wood.
Teachey coached at Wofford in Spartanburg, South Carolina, from 1994 through 2013. He coached at Hampstead (N.C.) Topsail High School since 2014, the past three years as head coach.
“We’re fortunate to add someone with the experience of Coach Teachey in this important role,” head coach Joey McGuire said in Tech’s announcement. “Coach Teachey will be a valuable asset to our entire defensive staff room, not only for his experience working with Coach Wood but his own experience of being a head coach and defensive coordinator previously. He will be a great addition to our football program.”
Teachey was on the Wofford coaching staff while Wood and new Tech safeties coach Rob Greene were Terriers players. Wood and Teachey were on staff together from 2007-12, Wood as wide receivers coach and later safeties coach and Teachey as defensive line coach.
Teachey coached the Wofford defensive line for 16 of his 20 seasons, also serving as the recruiting coordinator from 1999-2012. He was the defensive coordinator during his final season on staff in 2013.
Teachey began his career at Wofford as tight ends and tackles coach in 1994 before moving to outside linebackers coach from 1995-97. Teachey also served as the strength and conditioning coach at various stretches.
Teachey left Wofford after the 2013 season to accept a position with a local church. He soon joined Hampstead Topsail, serving as volunteer defensive consultant (2014), defensive coordinator (2015-16) and assistant coach (2018-21) before being named head coach.
As a college player, Teachey was a four-year letterman and three-year starter at tight end for East Tennessee State. The Wilmington, North Carolina, native was an all-conference honoree as a junior in 1989 and a team captain in 1990.
In other news Tuesday, Indiana State hired Tito Overton off the Texas Tech staff to be the Sycamores wide receivers coach. Overton was a graduate assistant and the Red Raiders‘ assistant wide receivers coach this past season.
