The Minerva Lions found their next head football coach across the county.
Former Perry head coach Zach Slates was approved as head coach by the Minerva Local Schools Board of Education during Monday night’s meeting. The board also approved the hiring of Tim Wolf as a varsity assistant football coach and assistant principal.
Slates spent four years as Perry’s head coach before he was removed last month. The former Perry offensive lineman who is in the Stark County High School Football Hall of Fame was coming off his most successful season. The Panthers won their last two regular-season games and a first-round playoff game on their way to a 6-6 record.
“I am extremely excited about moving forward with the Minerva Lions football program,” Slates said in a statement released by the school. “There are some great things that have been done here, and I am looking forward to the opportunity to lead the Minerva football program starting right now. I know there is unbelievable support from the community, and in all of the conversations I’ve had with the administration, they have shown me how much commitment there is from the school and administration to making Minerva Lion football the best it can possibly be.”
Wolf served on Slates’ staff with the Panthers and also has worked as an assistant basketball and track and field coach at Perry. He was Fairless’ head football coach from 2008-11.
“I am incredibly excited to be bringing on two dedicated, experiened and motivated men to lead the next chapter of Minerva football,” Minerva Superintendent Gary Chaddock said in a statement.
