The Eagles are certainly enjoying Antonucci while they still have her.
Antonucci scored four goals, including the tie-breaking goal in the 72nd minute and Etiwanda beat Chino Hills 5-3 in a Baseline League opener Friday night at Etiwanda High School.
“We were sloppy tonight. We hadn’t played in two weeks,” Etiwanda coach Jason Montgomery said. “It’s like their Super Bowl when we play them.”
Etiwanda has won the last four Baseline League titles, even though the last two years the Eagles lost the league opener to Chino Hills before winning their final nine games.
This year, the schedule rotated to have Etiwanda open with St. Lucy’s, except that game Wednesday was postponed because of heavy winds, making Friday’s game the league opener.
Etiwanda (9-2-1 overall) appeared to be on track to erase the last two league openers taking a 3-1 lead into the second half when things started to go sideways.
Eagles sophomore defender Layla Gonzales picked up her second yellow card of the game, in the 44th minute for apparently saying something to the referee. That second yellow card left Etiwanda playing with only 10 players for the remainder of the match
“That situation changed the whole complexion of the game,” Montgomery said. “It just got messy.”
Etiwanda, which outshot the Huskies 9-2 in the first half, suddenly had to play defensive. Montgomery had Antonucci out of the game to start the second half, which he has been doing lately so that the players get used to playing in the positions they will be in once Antonucci leaves the team.
He was fine with the way things were going before losing a player.
Chino Hills (5-5-4) suddenly came to life, and junior Yessenia Flores scored a pair of goals, in the 54th and 65th minutes to tie the score 3-3.
“We had to weather the storm to get through the first half then regroup at halftime,” Chino Hills first-year coach Louie Borja said. “The girls responded well in the second half.”
But after the game was tied and with Antonucci back in the game, Etiwanda wasn’t ready to settle for a draw.
The winning goal was scored when two Huskies players went up for a header with Etiwanda’s Alondra Talamantes, but Talamantes headed the ball forward toward Antonucci, at the top of the penalty area.
Antonucci hit a half-volley past a defender to herself then beat the goalie one-on-one for the go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute.
Antonucci scored her final goal in the 80th minute on a breakaway with the Huskies pushing forward for a tying goal.
“Special players do special things,” Montgomery said of Antonucci. “She can find a way to get in the right spots and make a difference.”
“Throughout the game, we’re trying to stay composed,” Antonucci said. “A lot of times the ball doesn’t bounce our way.”
Antonucci scored her first goal of the game on a clean shot from the top of the penalty area in the eighth minute, but the Huskies answered when Regan Ramiez scored off a free kick in the 10th minute.
Talamantes gave Etiwanda a 2-1 lead in the 24th minute, then Antonucci’s second goal gave Etiwanda some breathing room with another shot from the top of the penalty area in the 36th minute.
“This is a tough league. Nobody’s bad,” Montgomery said. “The games are going to get chaotic at moments. You’re not always going to be up three goals and cruising. When it got crazy tonight (the key is) how you get under control and looking like us.”
