Neymar has declared that the 2026 World Cup in North America will mark the end of his international career.
Despite Brazil’s struggles in the qualifiers, the 32-year-old expressed confidenc e in the team’s ability to secure a spot in the tournament.
“I know this will be my last World Cup, my last shot, my last chance, and I will do everything I can to play in it,” Neymar told CNN in an interview published on 9 January. The forward, who hasn’t featured for Brazil in over a year due to injuries, reaffirmed his commitment to returning in time for the competition.
Brazil currently sit fifth in the South American qualifying standings after 12 of 18 rounds. With the top six teams guaranteed qualification, they hold a five-point cushion over Bolivia in seventh. “I have a lot of faith in the team and the young players coming through,” Neymar said. “We’re not where we want to be, but I believe we can achieve something great together. We have a year, a year-and-a-half to work hard and do the right things to make it.”
Neymar played in Brazil’s first four qualifying matches but suffered a knee injury during their defeat to Uruguay in October 2023. Following surgery, he was sidelined for a year, making brief returns for his Saudi club Al Hilal in October and November before a hamstring injury ruled him out again.
“I’m going to work very hard to be with the Brazilian team,” he said. “I want to be there and give my best for the World Cup.” By the time the tournament begins in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, Neymar will be 34 years old.
The forward also hinted at a potential reunion with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at Inter Miami, the club owned by David Beckham. “Obviously, playing again with Messi and Suarez would be incredible,” Neymar remarked during an award ceremony in Dubai. The trio famously thrived together at Barcelona and briefly reunited at Paris Saint-Germain.
Neymar acknowledged that a move to Inter Miami wasn’t possible when he left PSG, as the American transfer window had already closed. However, he left the door open for the future, stating, “I’m happy in Saudi Arabia, but who knows? Football is full of surprises.”
Al Hilal are set to compete in the expanded Club World Cup in the United States this June, where Messi and Suarez’s Miami side will also participate. Neymar expressed excitement at the prospect of crossing paths with his former teammates. “They are my friends, and we still speak to each other. It would be interesting to revive this trio,” he added.
