Santa Maria Valley boys soccer teams had a grand evening Tuesday night in their respective league openers. Pioneer Valley, Santa Maria, Righetti and St. Joseph all won.
Here is a summary of area boys soccer action.
Mountain League
Pioneer Valley 1, San Luis Obispo 0
The Panthers (8-2-1, 1-0-0) scored a big win at home over the traditionally strong Tigers (5-3-2, 0-1-0) at Pioneer Valley to start their campaign in what appears to be a balanced league.
Carlos Paternina scored a hat trick with three goals against Cabrillo in a non-league Pioneer Valley win last week. With an assist from Jarib Asuncion, he scored the only goal of the game Tuesday night.
“Our goalkeeper, Eric Martinez, made two big saves,” to help the Paternina goal stand up, said Pioneer Valley coach Alan Brafman.
The Panthers will host crosstown rival Santa Maria in a league game Friday at 6 p.m.
Santa Maria 5, Paso Robles 0
Alex Martinez scored four goals, and the Saints (5-2-2, 1-0-0) rolled to a win over the Bearcats (7-5-0, 0-1-0) at Santa Maria’s Ralph Baldiviez Stadium.
Nathan Garcia tallied once for the Saints.
Righetti 2, Arroyo Grande 0
The Warriors (12-1-3) kept their best start in years rolling with a big win on the road against the traditionally strong Eagles (7-4-3, 0-1-0) in a Mountain League opener.
Armando Mireles assisted on both Righetti goals, one by Daniel Lagunas and one by Andres Gonzales.
Righetti will host San Luis Obispo in a league game Friday at 6 p.m.
Sunset League
St. Joseph 6, Atascadero 4
The Knights (4-5-0, 1-0-0) opened league play with a win at home over the Greyhounds (10-6-2, 0-1-0).
All the scoring took place in the second half. Abram Garcia knocked in five goals for St. Joseph, and Kyle Yearwood scored once.
Casey Paullus, Nery Ortega, Gabriel Ramirez and Matthew Mex-Sanchez all had an assist for the Knights. St. Joseph will play a league game at Lompoc Friday at 6 p.m.
Templeton 4, Santa Ynez 0
The Pirates (2-9-2, 0-1-0) were blanked at home in their Sunset League opener.
The Eagles moved to 5-5-2, 1-0-0. Santa Ynez will play a league game at Atascadero Friday at 6 p.m.
Ocean League
Nipomo 10, Orcutt Academy 0
The Titans (4-6-2, 1-0-0) overwhelmed the Spartans (0-11-0, 0-1-0) in this league opener at Nipomo.
J.D. Zarate knocked in three goals for Nipomo, and Justin Sights and Shane Smeda scored two goals each.
Besides notching three assists, Sebastian Zarate tallied once. Six Nipomo players had at least one assist.
Nipomo will play at Cabrillo in a league game Friday at 3:15 p.m. Orcutt Academy will play a league game at Templeton that night at 6 p.m.
Cabrillo 9, Mission Prep 2
The Conquistadores (3-11-2, 1-0-0) began their Ocean League campaign by routing the Royals (0-6-0, 0-1-0) at Mission Prep. No details were available.
