The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) men’s senior selection committee will meet in Ahmedabad on today to pick India’s squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Chairman Ajit Agarkar met Rohit Sharma in Delhi last weekend and a selection meeting has now been convened in Ahmedabad.
With the captain set to play the Indian Premier League (IPL) fixture against Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday evening, he is likely to join the meeting virtually in the afternoon. Coach Rahul Dravid will also be present but it’s not sure whether he would be flying to Ahmedabad or joining the meeting online like the captain.

“Yes, a meeting will take place in Ahmedabad on Tuesday afternoon. All selectors, coach and captain will be attending it,” says a source close to developments.
Interestingly, out of the ten IPL teams, seven are led by Indian players, and all are in contention to make the 15-member Indian squad for the T20 World Cup. While there are quite a few certainties from the IPL captaincy lot, who will make the squad, a few are bound to lose out. Here’s a look at which IPL captains will make it to the T20 World Cup squad(s) and who all could miss out: [READ FULL STORY HERE]
IPL Captains Who Might Miss India’s T20 World Cup Squad List
With Rohit Sharma named as captain and Virat Kohli expected to make the cut in India’s T20 World Cup squad, Australia legend Matthew Hayden has added his voice to the ongoing discussions over the merit of picking big names over rising stars.

“From an Australian cricket point of view, our philosophy is pretty simple. We pick not the names or the icons but select those who are going to win you the World Cup. We’ve got our own debates on our front. David Warner… should he go? We’ve had our challenges and I think we have been very good over the last 20 or even 30 years to actually think what is the side that is going to win,” Hayden said Star Sports.

With just one day removed from the T20 World Cup squad submission deadline, reports are emerging that the Indian think tank is now debating whether to elevate Rishabh Pant to the vice-captain for the T20 World Cup. Hardik Pandya is the designated vice-captain for India in T20Is and he was the deputy in India’ previous T20 World Cup campaign in 2022. Pandya is currently leading the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024, while Pant is at the helm of Delhi Capitals. Pant has had a good IPL so far more or less strengthening his place in the squad, however Pandya, on the other hand, has had a very average IPL so far both with the bat and ball.
But his value as a seam-bowling allrounder cannot be undermined and will make the final 15, However, whether he remains the vice-captain to Rohit Sharma is an intriguing development as the T20 World Cup squad announcement deadline nears.
Vice-captain choices India have to choose from
With Mohammed Shami injured, suddenly India’s fast bowling arsenal looks a big weak. Jasprit Bumrah has been the only top performing fast bowler in the ongoing IPL where bowlers have, as a rule, copped punishment on lifeless pitches. Mohammed Siraj has been going for plenty of runs as well. However, Sandeep Sharma, who represents Rajasthan Royals, has been impressive. With reports that the pitches in USA and the West Indies could be slow, Sandeep could very well break into the squad as the fourth seamer.
Murmurs are that Team management may overlook Sanju Samson for the T20 World Cup because the selectors feel they have enough meat at the top of the order and have enough players in form. So, for a backup wicketkeeper option, they are looking at someone who can bat lower down the order and fill in the specialist finishers’ role in that regard.
Players in fray for back-up Wicketkeeper’s slot in India’s T20 World cup Squad
In order to have batting depth, India are likely to take at least three all-rounders in the 15, the report stated. Hardik Pandya to keep his spot even though his form with the bat and ball still remains a concern. Shivam Dube is also expected to make the cut as a power hitter. Since Chennai Super Kings have seldom given him chances to showcase his bowling skills in the IPL 2024, there are apprehensions about considering him an all-rounder. But since India have limited options among batters who could bowl, Dube remains the frontrunner. Since Pandya’s bowling hasn’t been impressive in the IPL 2024, the selectors shall have both.
Allrounders India will pick in their T20 World Cup Squad
As per reports IPL 2024’s leading wicket-taker among spinners Yuzvendra Chahal is likely to miss out on T20 World Cup selection as the team management feels he is not a reliable fielder. [READ FULL STORY HERE]
Spinner to be selected India’s T20 World Cup Squad
It is understood that selectors are likely to name some travelling reserves along with the squad of 15 for the T20 World Cup. May 1 is the International Cricket Council (ICC) deadline for all teams to name their respective squads. The teams can make changes to the initial squad till May 25.
It’s not sure whether the Indian cricket board will announce the squad today itself but there is a strong possibility of that happening. There are plans to have a press conference in Mumbai on May 2 but there has been no official communication yet. Rohit will leave for Mumbai from Lucknow on May 1 in the afternoon or evening and there is a strong possibility of him addressing the media on May 2. Mumbai Indians have a home game vs Kolkata Knight Riders on May 3.
Will India’s Final 15 Look like this?
