PHOENIX − The Rate Bowl is finally here.
Rutgers football today will play Kansas State at Chase Field, looking to close out its season with an eighth victory and send its seniors out on a high note.
As far as opt outs go, coach Greg Schiano said Tuesday that running back Kyle Monangai will not play in the game, but instead will be assisting the coaches.
Everyone else who’s eligible is expected to participate, including linebacker Tyreem Powell and left tackle Hollin Pierce.
Follow along here for updates throughout the game:
Solid first half for the Scarlet Knights, who have 319 total yards of offense.
Big game so far from Antwan Raymond, who had 104 rushing yards on eight carries with two touchdowns in the first half.
Athan Kaliakmanis is 8-of-18 passing for 170 yards.
Rutgers’ defense has been shaky, but showed some improvement in the second quarter. Robert Longerbeam had a big INT to kill a Wildcats drive late in the half and helped set Rutgers up for a field goal to extend its lead.
An INT by Robert Longerbeam got Rutgers the ball at its own 42. The Scarlet Knights got to the Kansas State 30 but their drive stalled out and they settled for a 48-yard field goal by Jai Patel.
It’s 27-17 Rutgers.
What a game from Raymond so far.
This time he runs it in from 24 yards out for a touchdown, and it’s 24-17 Rutgers.
Kaliakmanis set up the touchdown the previous play with a 22-yard pass to KJ Duff on second-and-10 from the K-State 46.
Johnson with a 26-yard pass to Edwards and it’s all tied up at 17-17.
Jayce Brown had a 34-yard run on the drive to get the ball to the Rutgers 30.
Rutgers’ offense is playing well.
On second-and-10 from the Rutgers 25, Antwan Raymond ran around to the left side and broke free for a 65-yard run to get down to the K-State 10.
Two plays later, Ja’shon Benjamin ran it in from three yards out for a touchdown.
It’s now 17-10 Rutgers.
The Scarlet Knights got down to the K-State 15 after a tremendous 60-yard pass from Athan Kaliakmanis to Ian Strong, who made a great catch.
But Rutgers can’t get into the end zone and has to settle for a field goal.
It’s 10-10.
QB Avery Johnson keeps it and runs it in from two yards out for a touchdown.
It’s 10-7 Wildcats, who have 144 total yards of offense so far. Rutgers’ defense is having a tough time so far.
The Scarlet Knights go up 7-3 as true freshman Antwan Raymond, who got the start at running back with Kyle Monangai out, runs it in from two yards out.
Athan Kaliakmanis had a 12-yard pass to Ian Strong on second-and-14 on the previous play.
That’s a 13-play, 75-yard drive that took 7:06 off the clock for Rutgers, which has 42 rushing yards and 37 passing yards so far today. Kaliakmanis has rushed for 28 yards, doing a nice job making plays with his legs.
The Wildcats got down to the Rutgers 11 with the help of a 43-yard run by Dylan Edwards, but QB Avery Johnson throws three straight incomplete passes and Kansas State has to settle for a 29-yard field goal.
It looks like Greg Schiano is calling defensive plays with Joe Harasymiak now the head coach at UMass. Schiano said earlier this week they’d call plays as a staff, but it looks like (from our vantage point at least) he’s the one making the calls.
