The Orcutt Academy girls won the Division 1 championship at the McClane Soccer Tournament that took place at Fresno McClane High School Friday and Saturday.
The Spartans (7-3-1) went 4-0 in the tournament and out-scored their opposition by a combined 17-0. Orcutt Academy has won five straight.
The Spartans beat Santa Maria 2-0 on first-half goals by Cara Mia Shaloob and Veronica Amador to get to the tournament final. The Spartans tagged the Saints (11-1-2) with their first loss of the season.
A Santa Maria second-half shot hit the cross bar but didn’t cross the goal line. The Saints kept up a barrage on offense, but defenders Summer Alcantar and Zuri Zuzow helped the Spartans preserve the shutout.
Santa Maria beat Orcutt Academy 6-1 in a non-league game at Santa Maria Dec. 9. Other than the loss to Orcutt, the Saints won all their games at the McClane tournament, out-scoring their three opponents by a combined 18-0.
Shalhoob scored all three goals in Orcutt’s 3-0 win over host McClane in the Division 1 championship game. Stephanie Garcia-Silva had two assists.
Shalhoob scored 12 goals in the tournament and, early in the season, is taking up some of the scoring slack left by the graduated Sydney Madison, the Orcutt Academy program’s all-time leading scorer. Madison signed with Central Washington shortly before her 2023-24 senior season.
Orcutt Academy made it to the championship game of the CIF Central Section Division 5 Playoffs in 2024. The No. 2 Spartans lost 3-0 to No. 1 Madera Torres.
The Orcutt defense consisting of team captain Alcantar, Zuzow, Ellie Harrison and Eva LaMarca helped OA goalkeepers Thaliya Brown and Larissa Lorencz keep a clean slate in the McClane tournament.
Orcutt Academy beat Orosi 8-0 in the Spartans’ tournament opener. Shalhoob scored six times, and Peyton Miya and Lucia Llerena had a goal apiece. Garcia-Silva had two assists, and LaMarca and Amador both had one.
The Spartans upset higher-ranked Porterville Monache 4-0 in the second round. Shalhoob scored two goals, and LaMarca and Emma Fields each scored once. Garcia-Silva had an assist.
Fields, and sisters Lucia and Izzy Llerena gave the Spartans strong play in the midfield area during the tournament. Orcutt coach Brian Speer said Elizabeth Roden-Vargas, Alina McArthur and Valeria Bonilla came off the bench and gave the Spartans valuable minutes tournament minutes.
Orcutt Academy will host Pioneer Valley in the Spartans’ Ocean League opener Jan. 10 at 3 p.m.
