The last spot in the College Football Playoff came down to Alabama and SMU, with the Mustangs getting the nod and the No. 11 seed in the playoff. Needless to say, things aren’t going well for SMU in the first round of the playoff against Penn State.
SMU trailed the Nittany Lions 28-0 at halftime and 31-3 late in the third quarter. The performance by the Mustangs led to plenty of conversation on Twitter, with Alabama General Manager Courtney Morgan joining in:

As you can see, Alabama general manager Courtney Morgan let just one word do a lot of talking in explaining his thoughts on the first round of the playoff.
The blowout loss by SMU came a day after Indiana was pounded by Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish earned a 27-17 win but led 27-3 late in the fourth quarter. There were plenty of people who felt like SMU and Indiana did not deserve a playoff spot thanks to their lack of impressive wins.

As for Alabama, the Crimson Tide had a complicated resume. Alabama had strong wins over South Carolina, Georgia and LSU, but it also had three losses, including to a 6-6 Oklahoma team.
Courtney Morgan is in his first season on staff at Alabama. He previously served as the general manager at Washington under current Crimson Tide and former Huskies head coach Kalen DeBoer.

Alabama GM Courtney Morgan was far from the only person frustrated with the first-round matchups in the College Football Playoff.
SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum weighed in amid Penn State’s dominating performance. He ripped the CFP committee for the “blockbuster” opening games.
SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings threw three interceptions in the first half, including two pick-sixes as Penn State took full control. On offense, the Nittany Lions totaled 216 yards after a sluggish start. Those stats were part of the reason Finebaum told the committee to “take a bow” for setting up the games.
“So far, the CFP selection committee has given us some blockbusters,” Finebaum wrote on X. “Notre Dame led late over Indiana 27-3 and Penn State just went up on the committee’s final team 28-0 at the half. Take a bow.”
