Australia were the first OFC member to participate in FIFA World Cup™ qualifying, for the 1966 tournament in England. Following the withdrawal and disqualification of a number of opponents from both Africa and Asia, Australia took part in a two-leg play-off with North Korea for a spot in the finals.
Both legs were held at a neutral venue – the Olympic Stadium in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Phen. The Socceroos were comfortably beaten in both legs, losing the first 1-6 and the second 1-3, to lose the tie 9-2 on aggregate. Ladislav Scheinflug scored both goals for Australia.
