Fresh off a pair of top-10 finishes at the Birds of Prey World Cup two weekends ago, River Radamus finished 17th in the giant slalom on Dec. 14 in Val d’Isere, France. The Edwards skier posted a two-run time of 2 minutes 13.03 seconds, finishing a tenth of a second in front of teammate Tommy Ford as the top North American athlete.
Last year’s giant slalom discipline winner, Marco Odermatt (2:11.66), took the win as Austrian’s Patrick Feurstein (2:11.74) and Stefan Brennsteiner (2:11.78) rounded out the podium.
“This one really feels great,” Stöckli skier Odermatt told FIS after claiming his fourth-straight win on the Val d’Isère course. The 27-year-old won nine of the 10 GS races last year but failed to finish in the Solden opener in October and Beaver Creek earlier this month.
“To come back and gain the confidence in the race like this is not the easiest, but I knew I could do it,” said Odermatt, who had the fastest first-run time and held on as conditions worsened during the second.
“I also know that these conditions are exactly for me, because you have to fight — you have to ski well and yeah, I tried to do that,” he continued. “For sure today the luck was also on my side, because one mistake more… I guess I lost three seconds, and to lose another half a second more happens really fast today.”
Radamus posted a DNF in the first slalom run on day 2 of the tech race weekend as Norwegians Henrik Kristoffersen and Atle Lie McGrath took the top two spots and Swiss skier Loic Meillard placed third.
“La Face de Bellevarde is always a battle and this year was no exception,” Radamus stated in an email to the Vail Daily. “Limited visibility and difficult snow conditions made for a very demanding race. I’m happy with the direction my skiing is going but a few too many mistakes took me out of contention.”
Radamus said he is “now looking forward to a very special week of racing in Val Gardena and the ultimate GS slope on the circuit, Alta Badia.”
While the men’s World Cup speed skiers have been training all week on the Saslong downhill course in Val Gardena for competitions on Dec. 20 and 21, the tech side will travel to nearby Alta Badia for a giant slalom on Dec. 22 and a slalom the following day. Radamus has experienced tremendous success on the Italian slope.
The 26-year-old scored his first World Cup points there on Dec. 16, 2018. Over his six-year World Cup career, he has accumulated three top-10 GS finishes at Alta Badia, including a sixth place on Dec. 19, 2021. Currently, Radamus is 14th in the overall World Cup standings.
