New Texas Tech football offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich is due more than $3.4 million under his new contract, a deal of three years-plus that runs through Jan. 31, 2028.
The contract years run from Feb. 1 through Jan. 31. Leftwich is scheduled to make $1 million in the first year, $1.1 million in the second year and $1.2 million in the third. The breakdown on the three years consists of $300,000 annually in base salary and $700,000, $800,000 and $900,000, respectively, in rights fees for outside athletics-related income.
He also can earn bonuses on top of his guaranteed pay.
Tech released the contract Thursday in response to an open-records request.

Tech will pay Leftwich up to $229,294 after withholding taxes to satisfy his buyout at Texas State, his previous employer, and up to $20,000 for moving expenses. Leftwich is making $147,727 for the partial year of Dec. 9 through Jan. 31.
Should Tech fire Leftwich without cause, it would owe him 70% of the remaining value of the deal, offset by any earnings he had within the term of the contract. Should Leftwich initiate his own departure before the last game of the 2027 season, he or his future employer would owe Tech 35% of the remaining value of the deal. Tech agreed to waive Leftwich’s buyout if he leaves to become a head coach in the NCAA or a coordinator in the NFL.
Leftwich was making $350,000 this year as offensive coordinator at Texas State.
Tech named Leftwich, 30, its offensive coordinator on Dec. 6, succeeding Zach Kittley, now head coach at Florida Atlantic.
Leftwich was a college offensive coordinator for the first time with Incarnate Word in 2022, and that team led the FCS in scoring offense (51.5 ppg), team passing efficiency (193.62 rating) and first downs (374).
Each of the past two years, Texas State has averaged 37 points per game and ranked 11th in the FBS in scoring offense. Last year, Texas State (8-5) was 15th in the FBS in total offense, averaging 457.6 yards per game. This season, the Bobcats (7-5) are sixth in total offense, averaging 474.3 yards per game. They’ve been top-30 in both rushing offense and passing offense both seasons.
Leftwich and new defensive coordinator Shiel Wood, hired from Houston, have been with the Red Raiders since early last week. They’ve been involved in Tech’s recruiting efforts in the NCAA transfer portal and have spent practice time evaluating players and coaches on staff.
