BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Hoover Middle School Hawks boys’ soccer team soared to victory, winning the inaugural Brevard County intra-district travel soccer season championship, culminating in a final match against Viera Middle School held at Cocoa Beach High School on December 12.
Led by volunteer coach Jay Magua and Hoover’s Physical Education Coach Brenda Sadowski, the Hawks finished their season undefeated with a record of 11-1-0.
This historic season began with 10 district games, as Brevard County was divided into North and South districts, each resulting in playoffs featuring the top four teams from both divisions.
The Hoover Hawks’ journey was nothing short of spectacular. In their opening match against DeLaura Middle, the Hawks faced adversity early, trailing 1-0 before netting a late equalizer to end the game in a 1-1 draw.
After this first challenge, Hoover Middle School’s inaugural team never trailed in their remaining district games. In the South District Final, Hoover faced DeLaura Middle once again.
The Hawks scored the opening goal, but DeLaura quickly responded, tying the game and pushing it into a dramatic two-series overtime. The Hawks sealed the victory with a perfectly executed free kick, sending them to the county playoffs.
The semifinal playoff saw the Hawks take on McNair Middle from North Brevard. Despite McNair’s rugged defense, Hoover dominated the match with a decisive 3-0 victory. This win set the stage for an epic final against Viera Middle School.
The championship game began with the Hawks taking an early lead. Facing a physical Viera team, the Hawks doubled their lead before halftime. “I didn’t expect to be up 2-0 against this bigger Viera team,” Coach Magua admitted. The second half highlighted Hoover’s relentless team play, with their signature passing game and impenetrable defense shining through.
Taking advantage of the wind at their backs, the Hawks added another goal, finishing the game with a decisive 3-0 victory.
The Hawks’ undefeated run to clinch the first-ever Brevard County Middle School Soccer Championship is a testament to the hard work, talent, and dedication of the players, coaches, and supportive parents.
When asked how he felt about the team’s performance this year, the team captain responded, “It was simply epic.”
