Jason Eck has been named as UNM’s 34th head coach. He is expected to be officially introduced at a news conference this week.
The University of New Mexico has a new head football coach. Jason Eck is headed to Albuquerque after spending the past three seasons as head coach at the University of Idaho. He replaces Bronco Mendenhall, who accepted the head coaching job at Utah State earlier this month.
Eck posted a record of 26-13 during his three years at Idaho, including a 10-4 mark this season. The Vandals played in the FCS college football playoffs in each of Eck’s three years at the university.
Eck has 26 years of coaching experience at the FBS, FCS and Division II levels. Prior to taking the Idaho job, Eck spent six seasons at South Dakota State. He was the offensive coordinator at SDSU from 2019 to 2021.
In a statement, athletic director Fernando Lovo said, “I am thrilled to have Jason Eck as our next head football coach. Throughout his career, he has been a part of winning programs at all levels of college football and his passion for student-athlete success and well-being is evident.”
Lovo is expected to meet with the media on Saturday to discuss the hiring, following the Lobos men’s basketball matchup with Western New Mexico University.
