England’s national football squad have just heard that one of their first FIFA World Cup qualifier matches can’t be played at Wembley as originally planned because of . . . Coldplay.
The Three Lions were expecting one of their opening matches against 171st-ranked Andorra to take place on their traditional home pitch at Wembley Stadium, north London. However, it has just been revealed that English pop band Coldplay already have the national stadium booked out.
Thomas Tuchel’s national side found out that they will have to play second fiddle to the internationally renowned pop quartet and look elsewhere to embark on their World Cup project.
The team learned who they will come up against on the road to Canada, Mexico and the United States at the draw in Zurich, Switzerland, on Friday, December 13. New manager Thomas Tuchel will lead his selection out against Serbia, Albania, Latvia and Andorra over various dates in 2025.
Coldplay have Friday, August 22, 2025, until Monday, September 8, block booked for their London stop-off, where tickets are on sale for between €401 and €2,844.
To add insult to injury, Coldplay are not even performing on the day of the scheduled Andorra match as they take a couple of days off to blow up some more colourful balloons for their next gig, or something like that, on Saturday, September 6.
A few days after their encounter with the national team of the tiny Pyrenees country, Thomas Tuchel, who contractually only has one target. – to win the 2026 World Cup – takes the squad off to face Serbia, probably the toughest match of the qualifiers.
England’s World Cup qualifying fixtures begin with
Perhaps the English pop band will end up doing the right thing by letting their national team start off on the right foot and play at their home ground, Wembley stadium.
