Four CIAC high school football state championship games will take place today at Central Connecticut State University’s Arute Field and Rentschler Field. Here’s a quick look at each game:
Class LL
No. 5 West Haven (10-2) vs. No. 3 Greenwich (10-2), 6:30 p.m., CCSU: West Haven lost to Greenwich 24-6 to open the season and didn’t lose again until the final regular season game against Fairfield Prep. West Haven squeaked by Glastonbury 6-0 in the snow in the quarterfinal then beat Fairfield Prep in a rematch in the Class LL semifinal game. Greenwich likewise lost to Staples in its last regular season game but shut out Staples 14-0 in the rematch in the semifinal.
No. 4 Darien (10-2) vs. No. 2 New Canaan (11-1), 3 p.m., CCSU: These two FCIAC opponents are pretty familiar with each other. New Canaan beat Darien last year for the Class L championship and on Thanksgiving Day, New Canaan beat the Blue Wave again, 34-0. New Canaan’s only loss this season was to Masuk in Week 3, 14-0. Brookfield was last in a state championship game in 2015, when the Bobcats won Class M. Brookfield’s closest game came against Class MM finalist Masuk this year, a 28-14 win. St. Joseph’s three losses came to Class L finalist Darien, Class LL finalist Greenwich and Staples.
No. 5 Bloomfield (9-3) vs. No. 2 Ansonia (11-1), 10:30 a.m., Rentschler: Bloomfield, which is in its sixth straight state championship game, is the defending Class S champion. The Warhawks lost two of their first three games but rebounded to win six straight before losing to top-ranked Windsor 20-0.
