Hoover High School has announced who will lead the Buccaneers into the 2025 football season.
After serving as interim head coach since August, Chip English officially takes the helm following a season defined by resilience and teamwork.
“Coach English has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to our program,” said Dr. Harley Lamey, Athletic Director at Hoover High School. “This season, his ability to inspire our players, unite our staff, and engage with the community has been nothing short of remarkable. He has proven his capacity to lead Hoover football with excellence, and we are excited about the future under his guidance.”
“Hoover High School represents the pinnacle of high school football, and it’s an incredible honor to lead this program,” English said. “I’m excited about what lies ahead as we continue to build on this legacy. I am grateful for the trust and support of our players, staff, and the entire Hoover community.”
In August, Drew Gilmer resigned as the team’s head coach after he was accused of pushing a player during practice. The incident was reportedly caught on camera and the video leaked online.
English was then named interim head coach and the Bucs found success with him at the helm.

It started with game 1 out in Florida with a game-winning field goal kicking off the season.
The Bucs then won 9 more games, going 10-3 on the season to capture a 23rd region title.
Hoover also took out rival Thompson in an overtime thriller in the regular season, bouncing back from a 5-7 season in 2023.
The Bucs haven’t won a state title since 2017, the final one in the five-peat. With English at the helm, they’re hoping to get back there soon.
