Sammie Nutter, a CHS junior, controls the ball at midfield during a recent Islander home game. According to Head Coach Christian Alcantara, Nutter and her teammates played hard until the end of the game last week, in the Islanders 2-0 Division I Playoff loss at San Marcos High School.
According to Islander Girls Soccer Head Coach Christian Alcantara, his team had plenty of scoring opportunities in their First Round Division I Playoff game at San Marcos. “It was a tough game for us in that we dominated play for the majority of it, specifically the first 20 minutes. We had six or seven opportunities to score and we couldn’t get the first goal through. We were all over them at the start. Toward the end of the first half, they caught us with a ball over the top and it managed to get over our defensive backs. There was confusion between our keeper and the defenders and they tucked the shot in. A couple of minutes later they scored a second goal to go up 2-0.”
And it was more of the same in the second half. Alcantara said, “We continued to push the ball forward and we made some tactical changes to be more offensive minded. We had another seven to 10 opportunities in the second half and it wasn’t our day. Credit to San Marcos because they definitely earned it and worked hard. We wanted to dictate pace and possession. We did all of that and couldn’t score a goal. The soccer gods weren’t with us. San Marcos has a couple of big-time players. Our girls worked so hard and I couldn’t ask for much more from them. But you can’t win if you don’t score goals. But I couldn’t be happier with our effort and the quality of the effort. The whole team stepped up.” Coronado concluded their season with a record of 7-11-6.
