Despite all the fuss about Inter Miami being invited to participate in the first 32-team Club World Cup taking place next summer, there’s another American soccer side who’ll be involved.
Seattle Sounders were the 2022 CONCACAF Champions League winners, which earned them a spot in the experimental format that replicates international World Cups from 1998 until 2022.
With two MLS Cups and a Supporters Shield also to their name, the West Coast outfit will be looking to upset a few bigger names on home soil in 2025.
So, who might they draw in the group stage?
They’re in Pot 4 of 4. This means they cannot face Urawa Red Diamonds, Al Ain, Hope of Tunis, Mamelodi Sundowns, Pachuca, Auckland City or fellow MLS side Inter Miami in their first three fixtures.
Each group at the Club World Cup will comprise of one team from Pot 1, a team from Pot 2, one from Pot 3 and one from Pot 4.
With the Sounders being in Pot 4, we know they’ll face one team each from 1, 2 and 3.
With the Sounders in the lowest ranked pot, it is likely they will face at least one world-renowned club in a tough group to escape.
They have played both Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund in friendlies in the past, so there’s a chance Pot 2 gives them a rematch against one of these clubs in a competitive setting for the first time.
However, the first-time dream match possibilities are endless.
Sounders vs. Real Madrid, Sounders vs. Bayern Munich, Sounders vs. Juventus and Sounders vs. Paris St. Germain are all possible, among other big contests for the Americans.
They also have limited experience against the best of the South part of the Americas, which could change against clubs such as Boca Juniors, River Plate and Flamengo.
