Saudi Arabia is gearing up to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, marking a new chapter in the tournament’s history.
A FIFA evaluation report confirms that the event will likely take place during the cooler months, between October and April, to dodge the region’s intense summer heat—a major logistical flex, but not without its controversies.
The official announcement will drop on December 11, where the hosts for both the 2030 and 2034 tournaments will be unveiled.
The 2030 World Cup is set to be a globe-trotting affair, shared by Spain, Portugal, Morocco, and South America’s Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, in a nostalgic nod to the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup in Uruguay.
Saudi Arabia will join the Middle East World Cup club, following Qatar’s groundbreaking 2022 edition.
Despite concerns about human rights in the kingdom, FIFA gave the Saudi bid an impressive 419.8 out of 500 points—the highest score ever for a World Cup bidder.
The evaluation did flag human rights as a “medium risk,” but FIFA seems optimistic, suggesting that hosting the tournament could spark progress in this area.
