SAN ANGELO, TX — Carley Martinez has been playing soccer in San Angelo since she was 3 years old, and she doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
The San Angelo Central standout signed with her hometown college, Angelo State, recently as part of an exciting signing class for the Rambelles.
ASU is having its best season in program history and will play Colorado Mines on Sunday for the regional title.
Martinez said she has enjoyed watching their games and seeing her future team have so much success.
She said ASU was always at the top of her list.
“I’m excited that I get to stay here in San Angelo and be close to my family,” Martinez said. “At first, I wasn’t so sure about playing at the next level. But I went to a camp at ASU and it was really fun, and the coaches were really good, and I just know ASU’s a great school.
“Soccer has been a part of my life for a long time, and it just feels good to be able to keep playing at the next level.”
Martinez was the District 2-6A Newcomer of the Year as a freshman at Central, and she was a first-team all-district player as a sophomore.
The midfielder/forward became even more of an offensive force as a sophomore, highlighted by back-to-back hat tricks during district play.
Central was the district runner-up last year during her junior season, and the Lady Cats reached the second round of the playoffs.
Martinez hopes to end her high school career with another strong season.
“I think everyone has definitely developed, and I think we’ll do good this year,” she said.
Martinez was part of an eight-player signing class for ASU, which included Frenship’s Jaycee Garza, Stephenville’s Talon Phillips, Dallas Carter’s Lailah Conner, Flower Mound’s Jillian Greaves, Cypress Woods’ Ava Cantu, Brazoswood’s Oliva Arauz, and Fayetteville’s (Ark.) Eleanor Lock.
