WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – For the 64th year, NewsChannel 7 recognized the great football talent in central Wisconsin. The head coaches in the area voted to assemble this year’s class of NewsChannel 7 Football All-Stars. Here are the 12 winners on the defensive side of the ball:
Beginning on the defensive line, Carter Lueck of Stratford not just a NewsChannel 7 All-Star, but also a state champion. The senior was an honorable mention All-State player at defensive end, helping Stratford’s stingy D to a third-straight state crown.
Just down the road, Marshfield’s Simon Dagit is also an All-Star on the D-line. The senior was a unanimous all-conference selection in the Valley and helped Marshfield make a playoff appearance.
Deondre Bournes of Wausau West was not only a unanimous all-conference selection, he was also the defensive player of the year in the Valley. The senior had four and a half sacks for the Warriors in his final season.
Finishing off the defensive line is Storm Tiry of Stanley-Boyd. Another senior, Tiry had a whopping nine sacks for the Orioles in just 12 games played. He also helped Stanley-Boyd make the postseason.
Moving to linebacker, few with as good a season as Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Boone Schaier. The senior backer finished seventh in the state in tackles with 137, 72 more than any of his Chargers teammates.
Another guy top ten in the state in tackles; Ty Schnelle of Edgar. The senior captain led the Wildcats in tackles, helping Edgar to their second-straight state title. His defense helped pitch seven shutouts, including one in the state title game.
Linebacker typically is a position of leadership. Auburndale’s Colton Weiler fit that mold nicely for the Eagles. Weiler was the only player on Auburndale to go over the century mark in tackles.
The final linebacker All-Star is Dawson Meissner of Marshfield. Not only was Meissner an exceptional tackler for the Tigers, but he also had three interceptions on the season.
At defensive back, Cole Brenner had a year for the record books, leading the entire state in interceptions at eight. He also had the second-most tackles for Stanley-Boyd this season from his DB spot.
Another guy with a nose for the ball was Marshfield’s Brooks Hinson. He represents Marshfield’s third defensive All-Star selection, thanks in large part to his six interceptions, three of which he returned for touchdowns.
The final defensive back nod went to Alec Chapel. The Stratford senior was third in the entire state in tackles this past season, helping Stratford to a state championship. He also finished the year with four interceptions.
