At first glance, the finals of the men’s and women’s singles at the 2024 ITTF World Cup in Macao Special Administrative Region seemed to be an all-Chinese affair, with both titles already secured by the host nation. This could potentially dampen the excitement for neutral spectators. But upon closer scrutiny, one can see that these two pinnacle match-ups on Sunday night epitomized the very zenith of the current table tennis panorama. The intensity and enthralling nature of these showdowns, filled with unexpected twists and turns, were truly a sight to behold.
Stepping onto the stage first was the women’s top seed Sun Yingsha, who found herself embroiled in a thrilling seven-game contest against her compatriot Wang Manyu. From the outset, it was clear that Wang was in scintillating form, bursting out of the gates with an incredible intensity that posed a formidable challenge for Sun. As the match unfolded, Wang took a commanding 3-1 lead, leaving Sun with an uphill battle to climb.
But Sun, undeterred by the adversity, exhibited remarkable composure in the face of such immense pressure. She mounted a sensational comeback, displaying her resilience and determination. With the scores level at three games apiece, the tension in the arena was palpable.

The two athletes were evenly matched, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats. In the end, Sun summoned her best when it mattered most. With unwavering focus, she managed to secure a hard-fought 4-3 victory, etching her name in history as she claimed her very first World Cup title.
“I must admit that both Manyu and I put in an extraordinary amount of effort,” said Sun, who collapsed onto the court in exhaustion after clinching the win. “We truly left everything on the table, fueled by our deep desire to claim this title. At one point, I found myself trailing behind, facing a deficit that seemed insurmountable. Nevertheless, I summoned my resilience and fought back, painstakingly reclaiming each point.”
“The deciding game saw me take the lead, only to be fiercely challenged once again. In the end, I managed to secure victory by a mere two points. This is the charm of competitive sports, isn’t it? I believe that both Manyu and I deserve to be regarded as champions, standing tall on the final stage.”

The men’s final between Ma Long and Lin Gaoyuan was an equally sensational spectacle. Lin started off strong, displaying his supremacy by effortlessly winning the first three games. However, Ma, never one to back down easily, knew only too well that he needed something miraculous to shift the balance in his favor. The 36-year-old veteran fought tooth and nail for every single point, leaving no corner of the table unexplored.
Ma’s relentless efforts and resilience proved to be fruitful. He emerged victorious in the next three games, leveling the score at 3-3. The atmosphere in the arena crackled with excitement as the match approached its climax.
In the ultimate decider, Ma and Lin engaged in a magnificent exchange, showcasing their incredible table tennis prowess. However, it was Ma Long who exhibited his legendary mental fortitude, proving once again why he is considered the talisman of the current Chinese team. When the dust settled, Ma duly came out on top, completing a breathtaking turnaround that secured him his third World Cup title.

“It’s been quite a journey, and honestly, I never expected to come out as the champion in the end,” reflected Ma. “I had set my goal to make it to the top four, so winning the title was beyond my expectations.”
“Throughout my career, I have achieved numerous titles, but most of them were secured when I had a favorable start in the finals. This victory is different; it’s the first time I’ve won a title after facing a significant deficit in the match. I’m truly grateful to all the supporters who have cheered me on, and I’m also thankful to myself for not giving up when I was trailing behind.”
The latest victory marked an astounding milestone in Ma’s illustrious career, as he secured his 30th world title. This feat further extends his enviable record, which already includes triumphs in the Olympics and World Championships. Ma’s dominance in the sport is unparalleled, placing him in a league of his own and solidifying his status as one of the greatest table tennis players to have ever graced the sport.
