UNITED STATES — Graduate student midfielder Owen Smith was named to TopDrawerSoccer’s Team of the Week Tuesday after leading the Western Michigan men’s soccer team to a NCAA Tournament first round 5-1 win over SIUE and a program record third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament second round.
Smith, the NCAA’s assists leader, continued his exceptional play by adding two assists and a goal versus SIUE. During the victory, WMU’s five goals marked a new NCAA Tournament single-game program record in goals scored.
In the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Smith would also head in the go-ahead goal against Ohio State University behind assisting teammates graduate student forward Greyson Mercer and junior defender Emiel Nieuwhof.
This year, Smith set WMU’s single-season assists record with 17. Smith’s total is so impressive that in only one season, his assist tally is ranked ninth in all-time career assists created in program history. Overall, Smith is ranked fourth in NCAA DI men’s soccer in active career assists with 26.
During the 2024 campaign, the midfielder created the eighth-most points in single-season history for The Brown and Gold, with 29 points (6 goals, 17 assists).
