The Angelo State soccer team advanced to the regional final for the first time in school history with a 1-0 win Sunday over Dallas Baptist University at LeGrand Soccer Complex.
The Rambelles (14-1-5) defeated DBU (16-3-3) for the third time this season at LeGrand Stadium. First in the regular season, then to clinch the Lone Star Conference Tournament Title and in now the second round of the playoffs. They will face off against the top seed Colorado School of Mines on Dec. 1.
The Rambelles dominated time of possession and shots on goal 10-3, but the game remained tied at the end of regulation due to nine saves from DBU keeper Breanna Bowen.
The final, and best, opportunity came in the first 30 seconds of overtime. Sanai Stewart sent a cross into the box where Kailee Meyer sent it to Grace Jordan in the middle of the Box, sending it to the back of the net.
“Heading into overtime, I told the team what they needed to do, I told (Jordan), ‘You have ten minutes before I make a change, do everything you can to make an impact,'” ASU soccer coach Travis McCorkle said.
Jordan admitted the element of extra added to the drama of the contest.
“I was stressed out a lot, and I don’t like going into overtime a lot,” Jordan said. “But, I felt very confident in this team and everything that we can do. I know the last time that we went into overtime and we took care of business. I just felt like we could continue to do the same thing.”
With the win, ASU keeper Amber Lockwood tied the program record with 12 shutouts on the season, and the team’s 14th shutout of the season.
“We had 18 shots on the day and 10 on goal which is a great performance from us,” McCorckle said. “I would like to see a goal or two in regulation off that many shots, but I am still very proud of the effort that the girls have put in not just today but the whole year.”
