Jorge Fossati said: “The objective is to win the next match, but the main goal we have set ourselves, because we have analyzed things, is to be able to play in the playoffs. I also said it in January, I am not saying it now. If they told me that the qualification was like it is now, with four and a half places, I don’t know if I would have taken it because we have to see in what situation we were in and we have to be realistic”.
Lionel Scaloni said: “Looking at the qualifiers and how the scores are coming, you realize how complicated it is. Peru needs the points and will make it difficult. Even though we lost the other day, the team will continue its line and keep trying”.

Miguel Araujo, scorer of the goal in the team’s only victory in these CONMEBOL qualifiers, will be looking not only to keep a clean sheet but, why not, to dream of scoring again. The 30-year-old defender, in only six games played, scored the goal in the victory against Uruguay on date 9 of this tournament. In addition to giving the three points to the “Bicolor”, that sacred cry was the first in his career with the jersey of his national team. Throughout his career, he scored 18 goals and provided 11 assists in 353 total appearances.
Nicolás Otamendi, the team’s second top scorer in these CONMEBOL qualifiers, will be looking not only to give defensive solidity to the national team, but also to score again to add to his personal tally. The center back has scored three goals in 11 matches played and is only surpassed by Lionel Messi, who has six. First he scored against Paraguay in the 1-0 victory, then against Brazil in the 1-0 victory and the last one was against Venezuela in the 1-1 draw. The curiosity is that in these months he scored almost half of what he has scored in his whole career with the “Albiceleste”, since in 122 total appearances he accumulates seven goals and three assists.
These two teams have met 55 times over the years in World Cup, Copa América and CONMEBOL Qualifying matches. Out of the total, Argentina won 35, Peru won only five times and they drew the remaining 14. The last meeting was on June 29 in the group stage of the continental competition. With a brace by Lautaro Martínez, the victory went to the “Albiceleste”.
On the other hand, the “Bicolor” is going through a bad moment with quite negative results and missed the opportunity to win three points against Chile, the only team below them. With seven points, they are second to last after one win, four draws and six defeats. The team that is in the playoffs has 12 points, so it is impossible for them to reach the playoffs, but with a good result this time they can get closer. After the bad performance in the Copa América with two draws and a loss, the first two matches after that were not good, but they got a very important win against Uruguay. However, it arrives after a goalless draw, in a very bad match, against “La Roja”.
The “Albiceleste” comes to this match after a tough defeat against Paraguay, which endangered its leadership in the CONMEBOL Playoffs. The team’s performance was not good and the “Albirroja”, with a lot of order and effectiveness, turned the score around to take the three points. However, with 22 points, they remain at the top of the table after seven wins, one draw and three defeats. Likewise, of the last four matches, they won one, drew one and lost the other two. A negative fact is that the only time they played at “La Bombonera” during these qualifying rounds, they lost 2-0 to Uruguay.
The match between Argentina vs Peru on Matchday 12 of the CONMEBOL Qualifiers will take place at the Alberto J. Armando Stadium, popularly known as “La Bombonera”, located in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is located at the intersection of Brandsen and Dr. del Valle Iberlucea streets, in the neighborhood of La Boca. It has a maximum capacity of up to 54 thousand spectators. This match will not be played at the “Más” Monumental as the Argentine National Team is used to since the stadium will host the final of the Copa Libertadores and had to be ceded to CONMEBOL beforehand.
